Understand how work activities are driving inefficiencies in engineering organizations

Engineering DILO

Understand how work activities are driving inefficiencies in engineering organizations

What it is

The Digital Engineering DILO is a survey solution that sizes the efficiency potential within an organization and its teams as well as hypothesizes levers to increase employee capacity. This is done through determining how much time colleagues are spending on value added, core engineering work compared to low or non-value add activities.

What it looks like

Survey UX

Simple UX allowing survey participant to quickly input estimation of time spent on different activities

Sample outputs

How it works

DILO will take ~3 weeks from configuration to output

Context setting and syndication

Timing - ~1 week

  • Conduct stakeholder interviews to determine key areas to explore in open responses and demographics
  • Syndicate survey structure and content: demographics questions, activity taxonomy, and open responses
  • Review survey email communication templates
  • Identify a representative sample of organization as participant group and collect participant’s email address
Survey configuration

Timing - 1-2 days

  • Create DILO survey based on syndicated questions and upload participant email list
  • Update DILO survey communication based on client’s edits
  • Conduct survey testing trial before full launch
Survey Launch

Timing - 1 week

  • Launch survey to full participant list
  • Targeted outreach to improve response rates
Analysis and Insights

Timing - 1 week

  • Generate Excel dataset with survey responses
  • Identify preliminary insights and generate PPT output
  • Review insights and pressure test benchmark (if applicable) with experts
  • Share insights and benchmark (if applicable)

Benefits

High participation level (>50% response rate for 2,500+ engineers within 10 days)
Quick survey to complete
High level of customizability
5-15% Labor expense or capacity unlock (on baseline of total engineering labor expense)
Sample implementation cases using Optimix output

Material Yard

Reduce raw material variation by improving material yard management and optimizing material blending

Improve fuel and flux quality through “first-in-first-out” and quality spot check

Conduct daily analyses of the composition variation of the mixing iron ore material, especially for TFe, SiO2, and Al2O3

Sinter

Conduct sinter cup tests to understand changes in sinter properties

Optimize sinter operations to stabilize sinter throughput and key quality indicators, like drum index, and size distribution

Develop a basicity prediction model to control the basicity conformity better

Blast furnace

Conduct sinter cup tests to understand changes in metallurgical properties

Stabilize blast furnace operations through process control in the following key dimensions

  • Slag composition control
  • Charging scheme and burden distribution
  • Thermo-control scheme
  • Hot blast scheme
  • Slag control scheme
